RIP amigo Barney

Barney Cali CareyT0214

Hey how are you?

This is our tribute to Barney. He left us last week but he will never be gone. From the CS and after a few beers in his honour we thought he deserved something bigger than just the sad news, so we put this article together. He will remain always in our memories as he was one of our inspirators.

Same day, while international social media was echoing the horrible news we had to dive into Instagram to find tributes. Many were funny, others were epic like Tom Carey’s post. We were shocked with Kelly, who posted a photo of himself wearing a smokong in NYC on his way to some awards. Another example of Me, myself and just me. But Barney was never showing off his surfing covers either doing political campaigns, some of the reasons why he was natural and unique.

We decided that Gony should be the one telling us about Barney as he spend some time with him on Volcom surftrips to Fiji. Somebody who coild speak from the heart and close to him .Close because he wrote the article on the plane while flying from Brazil to Portugal.

From the skies, an emotive goodbye letter, sincere lines from two great surfers, better persons that for a moment got close together again like that first time at LAX airport.
Travel safe Barney, have fun up there with Keima, David Carradine, JFK and Andy Irons.

Hey How are you? Im Shawn. I remember his first word towards me at Los Angeles airport. It was late September of 2002 and the beginning of my first trip tio Tavarua Island, Fiji with the International Volcom Team. At 17 I hadn´t really travelled by myself before and to share that trip with Barney, Bruce, Chava, Wassel, Gavin, KaiBor, Randy Bonds, Skindo, Mike Morrissey and the top workers and bosses of Volcom was something I couldnt even imagine when I finished highschool.

After winning the World Grommets in Narrabeen I signed a new contract with Volcom in California and got an email from Mike Mailman with Eckert and Dougherty in cc saying I was invited to the Fiji trip with all of them as a bonus for winning that comp! chicken skin instantly when i was reading that.

It was weird at first as I was the only grom in that trip, not even Dustin Cuizon was there. Bruce was the next and he was already 22 I think, he was ripping at Cloudbreak, best style ever. Gavin and Barney were my idols since I watched the Magna Plasm in 1998 and I couldnt even talk to them, I was so shy and my english wasnt fluid enough at the time. Barney used to surf on the 6.30 boat to Cloudbreak and I did everyday as well to surf with him. He didn´t have the Superhero wetsuits in Fiji but his hair was multicolour and he was grabbing both rails in the barrel, trying rollos on every other wave and finishing the roundhouse cutbacks with crazy laybacks, using the left hand to get up.

His skinny and long legs made his style unique, it was amazing for me to watch him surf live. Calm, with a smile all day long he couldnt be more kind, such a cool guy. From the first moments he treated me like an adult showing a lot of respect and trying to make me feel comfortable with the group, even if it was hard sometimes because of the age difference and language. We were at LAX just before boarding, everyone having drinks at the bar, I ordered a coke and the bartender told me I couldn´t be at the bar if I wasn´t 21… So I had to be seated on a table. Mails and Barney came and sat with me and Barney shared his beer with me, the bartender didn´t even noticed. He was a great person, the super talent he had for surfing, painting or making robots wasn´t comparable to his human quality.Just a few minutes with him were enough to see how amazing he was and to admire him even more.

Meetin Barney was one of the best experiences that I have lived thanks to Volcom. His backside rollos have inspired surfers of today like John John or Julian Wilson…  The same airs that these guys do now he was doing them in cold water with booties, arrow surfboards and a wolverine wetsuit. Another level of creativity in Santa Cruz in the late 90s. He was also a big wave surfer, dropping massive waves at Mavericks but never losing his tight stance and unique style, like surfing a 3 foot wave. The sad new about him passing afftected me a lot the other day when I was surfing in Brazil with Aritz, who told me that he had suffered a heart attack. He was sad as well as they sahred a session at Teahupoo not long ago , and just after meeting Barney invited Aritz to his wedding which was going to happen that day in Tahiti, he had the flight and couldnt make it but will always remember that. What a unique character he was… He was carrying positive energy all the time and I´m sure he still is, creating, surprizing, improvising and most of all inspiring others every second.

My most sincere condolences to his family, friends and surfing community of Santa Cruz.
Barney! It was a pleasure! I keep some of your greatest details for the rest of my life. Thanks from my heart!
